A Story
The woodpecker was not always a bird. This is the story of how this bird came to be.
Once upon a time there was an old lady with a very long nose. She had a terrible habit of not minding her own business. She always wanted to stick her looong nose into everybody’s business. Very often she eavesdropped to conversations and then shared the information with everybody. But, she also added some other details that were not true. This way she made people always argue with each other.
When the forest wizard saw all of this, he took a bag and filled it with ants, bumble bees, mosquitoes, flies, and lots of other insects. Then, he gave the bag to the old lady.
The Forest Wizard: Kind lady, take this bag and take it home. But, mind your business! Do not open the bag and do not stick your nose into it! If you do so, you will be in big trouble!
The old lady: I promise not to stick my nose into the bag. I’ll mind my business!
But, as the old lady was walking home, she got more and more curious. In the end, she couldn’t stand it anymore. She sat on a rock and opened the bag. All the insects started flying, running, and crawling out of the bag. The old lady started running in circles and chasing after the insects. But, she managed to catch only a few. She closed the bag and pretended that everything was ok.
Sometime later, she heard footsteps. It was the forest wizard.
The Forest Wizard: I heard some buzzing! I sensed some crawling! What happened?
The old lady: I, I….
The Forest Wizard: You promised to mind your business and not open the bag!
The old lady: But, but, I was so, so curious! I had to! The Forest Wizard: I told you that big trouble will come if you break your promise. Now, I will turn you into a bird. You have to catch all the insects that ran away from the bag. Once you catch enough of them, you can become a woman again!
The wizard waved his magical wand and poof! The old lady became a bird with a long, long, beak, called “woodpecker”. Ever since that day, the woodpecker hunts insects with its long beak, hoping to turn back into a woman. But, despite all its efforts, it seems that the woodpecker cannot catch all the runaway insects. And so you can see woodpeckers all around you, hunting and trying to catch all the insects in the world, hoping that one day they can turn into a woman again.
